Voters in Jackson County, Oregon took a huge step for the right to know yesterday, when they voted to ban cultivation of genetically modified crops in their county. They overcame out-of-state spending led by Monsanto and Syngenta that amounted to almost $10 for every registered voter in the county.
Obviously, Monsanto and its allies wanted very much to win this one. But they failed. Congratulations, Jackson County!
Next up: the voters in Oregon state will build on this momentum and vote on labeling of foods containing GMOs in November.
What happens next in Oregon will have huge national and global implications. That’s why Monsanto and the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) are already assembling plans to deal a blow to the movement for GMO labeling
