Ten Tips for A Thinner Thanksgiving
Ten Tips for A Thinner ThanksgivingTen Tips for A Thinner Thanksgiving has been one of my most popular blog articles. Each year I adjust it a little to give new information! I share with you how to enjoy the holiday season without the guilt — or the weight gain. How do you maintain your healthy habits while still enjoying all the holiday food? Here are some of my best tips for having a healthy Thanksgiving.

Ten Tips for A Thinner Thanksgiving

1. Don’t go to the Thanksgiving dinner hungry I know the temptation is to save your appetite for the big feast BUT that is a recipe for overeating. It is a good idea to eat breakfast and kick-start your metabolism for the day. With your metabolism firing, your body will better be able to burn the foods you are eating later rather than storing those calories as fat. 2. Thanksgiving dinner is not an all-you-can-eat buffet: Fill your plate half with vegetables, one quarter with a lean meat and the rest with a starch of your choice. Eat slowly and stop when you are full. 3. Turkey – go skinless 4. Side Dishes – watch your portion size: Go for smaller portions. This way you can sample all the different foods. Moderation is always the key. Ten Tips for A Thinner Thanksgiving5. Drink plenty of water: Alcohol and coffee can dehydrate your body 6. Consider substituting sugar – You can substitute unsweetened applesauce or pureed prunes for half the sugar in recipes or use sugar substitutes in place of sugar and/or fruit purees instead of oil in baked goods. 8. Reduce oil and butter wherever you can. 9. Try plain yogurt or fat-free sour cream in creamy dips, mashed potatoes, and casseroles. 10. Exercise Increase your steps or lengthen your fitness routine the weeks ahead and especially the day of the feast.
