The apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene comes in several variations, with APOE4 being one of the most widely studied in relation to Alzheimer’s disease.

Individuals who inherit one copy of the APOE4 gene from a parent have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s, while those who inherit two copies have an even higher risk.

It’s crucial to understand that having the APOE4 gene is a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, not a definitive predictor.

Many people with the APOE4 variant never develop Alzheimer’s, and conversely, many who develop the disease do not have the APOE4 gene.
